This was the initial design for Temu, this project started on 2021 and this was my bootcamp project. At that time, I’m still new to Figma and basic rules of UI, I didn’t know what was auto-layout and I just picked a font and a color that I liked from the list without thinking much of it. This project took a long time for me to finish due to graduation and me moving to another city, so the design process was cut off during that time and I continued working on this project on August 2023. There’s obviously some design inconsistencies, and the prototype was so messy so I decided to do a redesign for this project! Looking at my old design, I feel embarrassed, and I kept saying ‘Omg, what was I thinking?’ but I also think that this project, is one of my very first projects that I’ve worked on and is a prove that I’ve come a long way and that I’ve improved and I’ve grown as a designer! 🫶🏻
here are the things that I changed for the redesign & why,
I changed the color from Bright Purple to Dark Blue
I chose to change it to blue because blue corresponds with trust, openness, security and reliability. According to Scirp, blue makes consumers more open minded, flexible, and more creative. I chose blue because I hope the users can feel comfortable and trust the app. I feel like the purple color that I chose back then is too bright and it will strain the eye after a long use, this will cause discomfort for the users.
The font that i used for the first design was Futura, then I changed it to Montserrat.
Futura is a great font, it has personality, it looks great, I chose Futura because of all these reasons, but sadly it’s not the best font to use for mobile app design. Futura’s readability is not that good for small sizes texts. I also didn’t tweak the letter spacing for this design, which made it even less readable. I also don’t like the look of it for my buttons. The font weight is either too light or a bit too thick for buttons.
I changed the font to Montserrat because I really like how it looks and the personality it’s giving. Montserrat looks clean, modern and minimal which I loved and it has great readability. The letters are well proportioned so it looks great in both small and large sizes. It’s also one of the best fonts for mobile app design so the change of the font to Montserrat is one of best decisions that I made on the redesign
The buttons in the initial design? A nightmare. It’s inconsistent, the font weight for the text is wrong, the spacings are wrong, the sizes are wrong. It’s a circus. After more reading on guides and looking inspirations, I learned my lesson and I created better buttons for the redesign.
